Courtney B. Vance’s performance felt inconsistent; at times he seemed to be portraying someone who was overtly political and prejudiced, then suddenly displaying genuine concern for others, only to revert back to a focus on race, and then again demonstrating empathy. It seemed as though he struggled to maintain a consistent character arc, giving the impression of shifting perspectives abruptly. However, aside from that, this film feels like a lesser-known relative of *Platoon*. While it doesn’t quite reach the heights of *Platoon*, it's more consistently well-made than *Full Metal Jacket* was. The film’s effectiveness arises from an effort to portray events without resorting to heroic tropes or action movie clichés, opting instead for a straightforward depiction of war. There isn’t any grand narrative arc, discernible moral message, or commentary on Vietnam compared to other conflicts; it simply presents itself as a war movie. It shares similarities with *Saving Private Ryan* in its ability to simultaneously express support for soldiers while also conveying an anti-war sentiment. It's difficult to achieve, but the filmmakers manage to balance showing extreme violence with illustrating the humanity of those placed in such terrible circumstances.
