This *’Halloween'* reboot didn’t really do anything for me. It shouldn't have come as a shock, since I don’t particularly love the 1978 original either; I like it, but it isn't something that excites me personally. Looking back at what I wrote about that earlier film and thinking about this one while watching, this version is just inferior in every respect. The only thing I appreciated was the Michael Myers theme music, which is simply a holdover from the 1970s movie—and it’s great to hear it again, but I would have preferred if they hadn't included it... it seemed like they were trying to shoehorn it in just for the sake of having it. What this film needed was a performance reminiscent of Jamie Lee Curtis, and nobody delivers that – Scout Taylor-Compton gave it an effort, but didn’t quite manage it. I never found Michael Myers particularly frightening or disturbing in the first movie, and that's true here too, even more so, honestly. He just seems relentlessly forceful all the time; there’s no mystery or creepiness to him, at least not in my opinion. Malcolm McDowell didn't make much of an impression as Loomis either, although it was nice to see Brad Dourif appear. The first 50 minutes and the last 50 minutes felt disjointed, and I might be imagining things, but that’s how it seemed. It initially appeared like they were presenting a distinct interpretation of *'Halloween'*, then the latter part just felt like a more conventional, formulaic remake. Without the title attached to it, this would be a very unremarkable film... at least, that's my take on it.
