Filipe Manuel Neto on Halloween II

1/10 · Feb 14, 2023

Spending money to see this isn’t worth it. I am familiar with the original series, but "Halloween" is not something I find enjoyable. It's just not my kind of horror; slasher films feel too silly and likely only frighten people who measure their fear by how much fake blood appears on screen. Still, Carpenter’s movies have earned a reputation as classics to some degree. The older sequels don’t even warrant being considered examples of quality filmmaking—they are truly terrible. It was the low quality of those later films that led Rob Zombie to try and reboot the franchise. And if the first film wasn't good, this one is even worse. The movie jumps right into things. Picking up where the last one left off, it immediately throws you into action with a lot of deaths involving people you don’t know and don’t have reason to care about. The result is essentially a violent bloodbath. The writing is amateurish at best, serving as an excuse for a horror movie based solely on excessive gore. The acting isn't great either. Malcolm McDowell, who usually delivers solid performances when directed well, gives one of his worst showings here; not only does he have very little to do, but what he does is poorly executed and the character itself is unpleasant. Brad Dourif does what he can, but honestly, I can’t praise his performance beyond saying it was adequate. He's still the best actor in the film. The rest of the cast is unremarkable or just plain bad, including all of the women involved. From a technical standpoint, the movie relies heavily on CGI and copious amounts of fake blood. The director seems to have forgotten that audiences connect with films more when they feel some empathy for the characters, especially the main one. Instead, he provides us with as much fake blood as his budget allowed, along with gruesome deaths. It's no more thrilling or scary than an expensive video game; however, it probably made a lot of money for those involved...
