It was a pleasure experiencing this film in cinemas once more, roughly four decades after John Carpenter first presented his style of horror, featuring Jamie Lee Curtis’s portrayal of the somewhat scatterbrained “Laurie,” who unexpectedly becomes embroiled in the vengeful actions of the characterless “Michael Myers,” someone that perhaps only Donald Pleasence ("Loomis") has any hope of protecting her from. The mounting suspense and speed are quite effective, aided by clever employment of sound and lighting; I wasn’t overly impressed with the electronic soundtrack, though. The screams from PJ Soles and Nancy Kyes add to the atmosphere, as do Pleasence's infrequent appearances. Later installments failed to live up to this initial psychological horror – there aren't many special effects that are worthy of mockery or even comment, truthfully – and if you have an opportunity to view it as originally intended on 35mm film, I would suggest taking advantage of it.
