Forty years after the events depicted in ‘Halloween’ (1978), Laurie Strode once again confronts Michael Myers. Strode has spent four decades preparing for this inevitable encounter with Myers. Naturally, he manages to escape, and their meeting feels like an inevitability. The storyline about Strode's doomsday prepping stretches believability a bit, but it’s still enjoyable. Jamie Lee Curtis is excellent in her return as Laurie Strode, and Nick Castle reprises his role as Michael Myers. He certainly lives up to the image people have of him; his killings are more savage than before. Director David Gordon Green handles things remarkably well. Many of the violent acts occur offscreen, but the aftermath is shown. There's also that fantastic tracking shot where Michael returns to Haddonfield. The camera follows him through a typical house as he kills someone, then continues following him back out onto the street and into another home for more violence. Michael’s introduction in the psychiatric facility is quite striking when all of the other patients begin acting disturbed. After that, we see the opening credits with the familiar theme music—a truly inspired touch. Writer Danny McBride deserves recognition; he honors the original film through numerous references (like Laurie standing near a window and Michael's missing eye), while also adding his own creative touches. It raises the question of who is pursuing whom. He injects some humor into the story, too, which surprisingly works well—the babysitting scene being one example. However, it’s not without its flaws. At times ‘Halloween’ relies on predictable horror movie clichés (a character tripping while running, illogical choices). And despite her decades of preparation, Strode's performance isn't as effective as it could be. The biggest disappointment was the character of Dr. Sartain (Haluk Bilginer), who feels like a less impressive version of Dr. Loomis and has too much screen time. Overall, David Gordon Green and Danny McBride have finally atoned for four decades of underwhelming sequels (Halloween: Resurrection is not fondly remembered). While this 2018 installment probably won’t reach the same legendary status as the original, it's a worthwhile addition to what has been a generally lackluster series.
