The film’s central character, a young man identified by his name (Jamie Bell), displays some unusual fixations – he enjoys observing couples in intimate moments from a treehouse before devising his own unconventional methods of preventing pregnancy! His home life is difficult following the death of his mother, and he believes "Hallam" was responsible for her demise. Unable to persuade his father (Ciaràn Hinds) of this, he runs away to Edinburgh where he becomes infatuated with hotel manager "Kate" (Sophia Myles). He asks her for a position in the kitchen and soon finds himself returning to his previous habits, aided by an unusual high vantage point within the hotel. It doesn't take long before he uncovers that she is involved in a relationship with a married man (Jamie Sives). This man realizes what’s happening, and "Jenny" becomes aware as well. What will happen to this troubled young man? Bell delivers a very believable performance; he balances portraying a sexually driven adolescent with someone entangled in a distressing mystery that could be real or simply a product of his overly imaginative mind. The depiction of the kindhearted "Kate" is also effective, and so too is that of his grumpy kitchen colleague "Raymond" (Maurice Roëves). While the plot stretches credibility at times, it offers an insight into the thoughts of a young person experiencing trauma, and I found Bell to be a captivating performer.
