“Half Light” (2006) blends drama, romance, ghostly occurrences, and suspense against the backdrop of a secluded British coastline. Following the loss of her child and an impending divorce, a writer—played by Demi Moore—relocates to a cottage situated on the distant Scottish coast. It’s there that she begins experiencing unusual, occasionally supernatural events while also forming a connection with the attractive lighthouse keeper, portrayed by Hans Matheson. Henry Ian Cusick takes on the role of her husband, another writer who hasn't achieved success, and Kate Isitt appears as her close confidante from London. Other significant characters include a woman possessing second sight and the local constable. As the premise suggests, “Half Light” is a drama/mystery incorporating ghostly elements and some thrills toward the film’s conclusion; it doesn't quite reach horror territory. It shares similarities with films such as "Dark Water" (2005), “The Wicker Man” (1973/2006), “The Fog” (1980/2005), “The Haunting of Seacliff Inn” (1994), “The Sixth Sense” (1999) and "Loch Ness" (1996). Those who enjoyed those movies will likely find something to appreciate here, as it boasts a haunting atmosphere alongside stunning views of the British coast. Initially, there are a few familiar tropes—like an unsettling incident that turns out to be a nightmare within a dream—though this only occurs once. Roughly halfway through, a plot twist emerges that I didn't anticipate, followed by another more conventional Hollywood-style development in the final act. While the scenery is beautiful, the first portion feels dreary and commonplace, essentially resembling a romance novel, but things improve considerably with the mid-point twist. From that point onward, it becomes quite engaging. Some viewers have expressed reservations about the improbable conspiracy presented in the latter part of the film, as well as its reliance on too many unresolved details. However, this makes more sense when you consider the considerable success of a particular individual and the presence of envy, bitterness, and greed—among other factors that I can’t discuss without revealing spoilers. Regarding those “details,” they are easily rationalized if you take into account the flexibility of the underlying plan. It may feel formulaic, but shows like Forensic Files demonstrate that these kinds of deceptive schemes aren't as far-fetched as we might assume. The film has a running time of 1 hour and 50 minutes and was filmed in Wales and England (Cromwell & London), not Scotland. GRADE: B
