It was an agreeable film, though unlikely to revisit and difficult to wholeheartedly suggest. I’m fine with Brendan Fraser’s performance; he did a good job in his smaller part. However, Alex Wolff really drives the narrative, interacting effectively with all of the other characters. It's unusual to see a story centered on the college years, but they depicted the peculiarities of an exceptionally intelligent young person adjusting to a new environment reasonably well. What truly detracts from the film is the number of offenses Eli experiences while he’s between 13 and 14 years old. Another issue is that the subject matter—trivial pursuits—isn't particularly captivating, as demonstrated by this movie itself. A competition involving practical science would likely have been more engaging. Although I don’t feel bad about having watched this understated, everyday story, there isn’t a great deal to discuss about it; the ending felt rather empty.
