Having performed Shakespeare myself, I feel confident in saying this is the finest film adaptation of his work I’ve encountered. It stands alongside Kurasawa's RAN in terms of quality. The script is exceptional, and both the direction and acting are superb. Bhardwaj has made some changes to the order of events and narrative, but they don’t stray so far that it becomes dissimilar from Shakespeare's original. Even the moniker given to the enigmatic rebel, Roohdaar, translates to "spirit" or “ghost” in Hindi. More significantly, Bhardwaj utilizes the play as a way to connect with and offer commentary on a difficult time marked by conflict between India and Pakistan. And, like Kurasawa, he openly criticizes vengeance and warfare.
