It's striking how these characters don’t necessarily share your perspective, yet they are deeply moved by the strength of your convictions. Hacksaw Ridge comes from director Mel Gibson and features a script by Robert Schenkkan and Andrew Knight. The film draws its foundation from the 2004 documentary The Conscientious Objector, and it includes performances from Andrew Garfield, Sam Worthington, Vince Vaughn, Luke Bracey, Teresa Palmer, Ryan Corr, Hugo Weaving, and Rachel Griffiths. Rupert Gregson-Williams composed the score, with Simon Duggan handling the cinematography. The film portrays the actual acts of bravery performed by Desmond Doss, an American pacifist who served as a medic in WWII during The Battle of Okinawa. It’s wonderful to see Gibson back at the helm, especially given his focus on the harsh realities of war and the important personal narratives within it. Desmond Doss's story is genuinely uplifting, and Gibson and his collaborators have done justice to his experiences. The initial portion of the film explores Doss' early life, revealing details about his family, his beliefs, and the development of his relationship with Dorothy Schutte. Following Pearl Harbour, he joins the military, and we then observe boot camp, which is marked by bullying and exclusion because Doss refused to even handle a rifle—much less use one! Once the overtly political elements of the military narrative have run their course, Doss and the rest of the 77th Infantry Division are deployed to Okinawa with the goal of taking the Maeda Escarpment (Hacksaw Ridge), where a true legend emerges. As is characteristic of Gibson’s work, the battle sequences are intensely realistic and graphic, exposing the harshness of war for dramatic effect. Amidst the chaos—which is powerfully presented through smoky atmospheres and a landscape devastated by weaponry—Doss (superbly portrayed by Garfield) takes center stage. Within this turmoil appears humanity in its purest and most sincere form, creating an engrossing experience that also excites those fully invested in this extraordinary story. 9/10
