The movie was fantastic, largely due to its positive message. It wasn’t just that though; the production quality was high with a strong cast giving excellent performances. The special effects were impressive, and the setting for much of the second half was also quite good. This is a film made in partnership between the United States and Australia. Mel Gibson returned as director after ten years. It received six Oscar nominations, so it will be interesting to see how many awards it ultimately wins. The story centers around World War II, based on a real person's life and events. It recounts the experiences of an American young man named Desmond Doss, who enlisted in the army wanting to serve his country. However, he faced difficulties during training because of his religious beliefs. Once he completed that phase, the rest of the film highlights his courage in combat against Japanese forces at Okinawa, specifically at Hacksaw Ridge. The narrative draws inspiration from one of the ten commandments. Doss’s strong faith and adherence to those principles extended into the war zone. The early parts of the movie explain why he holds these beliefs so strongly. A childhood argument with his brother, followed by saving an injured man in a car accident before joining the army, are key events. It functions as both a war film and a commentary against war itself. Most importantly, it portrays the bravery of one individual, reminiscent of Gandhi’s actions on the battlefield. He acted according to what he believed, but I have a different view. I enjoyed the movie as a biographical film and for the message it conveyed; it was also very entertaining. However, regarding Doss' beliefs, I think they were questionable. Initially, if he truly adhered to the commandment, he wouldn’t have joined the army at all – that's the foundational principle of following those rules. He was simply an unusual individual with this conviction and fortunately succeeded in carrying it out under difficult circumstances. You would likely feel differently if you considered everything from a non-believer's viewpoint, mainly because he saved his comrades while allowing his enemies to perish. Nevertheless, it’s certainly commendable, at least from an American perspective. He is a true hero for his nation. It ranks among the best war movies ever made; instead of calling it a must-see, I would say don’t miss it. _7.5/10_
