I’ve tended toward being on the wrong side of things, both in life and when betting. I hope to change that going forward. Thank you. Guys and Dolls is directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz and adapted for the screen by Mankiewicz, Jo Swerling, Abe Burrows and Damon Runyon. The cast includes Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra, Vivian Blaine, Robert Keith, Stubby Kaye, Sheldon Leonard, B.S. Pully and Johnny Silver. Frank Loesser composed the music, and Harry Stradling Sr. was in charge of cinematography. Gambler Nathan Detroit (Sinatra) struggles to find a place for his craps game. He needs $1,000 to pay a garage owner so he can hold it there, and makes a wager with Sky Masterson (Brando) that Sky can convince the virtuous Sarah Brown (Simmons) to go out with him. Despite some hesitation, Sky agrees to take her on a date in exchange for getting people to attend her mission. Simultaneously, Nathan’s longtime fiancée, Adelaide (Blaine), is pushing him to settle down and marry her. Since I've never seen the stage play, I don't have a sense of how well it translated to film. While I agree with the common opinion that both Brando and Sinatra seem wrong for their roles—the former being an excellent actor who struggles with singing, the latter a great singer given a part that doesn’t suit him—the movie still manages to be enjoyable entertainment. Samuel Goldwyn invested heavily in bringing this story to the screen, and it's evident in the lavish production values (though Goldwyn was reportedly unhappy with how much money it made). The songs are straightforward but memorable, the dance numbers are expertly choreographed, and the vibrant color photography is a pleasure to watch. Overall, Mankiewicz does a respectable job directing his first musical. It’s hard not to imagine how much better the film might have been if MGM had cast Gene Kelly as Sky Masterson; however, it runs about 30 minutes too long. Nevertheless, with Simmons and Blaine being charming, and Stubby Kaye delivering an excellent performance, it's easy to overlook its shortcomings and simply enjoy the colorful experience. It earns a rating of 7/10.
