I must admit, initially I mistakenly believed Don Johnson was portraying Kevin Costner during the initial portion of the movie. However, even once that confusion cleared up, it didn’t significantly improve things – it remains a fairly unexciting crime story lacking genuine suspense. Rebecca De Mornay portrays "Haines," an attorney with aspirations who is brought in to represent "Greenhill," a rather unlikeable man facing charges for his wife's murder. What unfolds afterward is a particularly detached courtroom drama as he initially manipulates her, before she realizes and decides that the situation needs to shift. The narrative feels entirely foreseeable, missing the tension found in something like "Jagged Edge" (1985). Furthermore, Sidney Lumet doesn’t seem to put much effort into developing the characters; they come across as superficial and malicious, failing to capture my interest or hold me engaged throughout what felt like an extended series of transparent plot developments. The conclusion is appropriate for the story, but I would have appreciated it arriving roughly thirty minutes sooner! It's really something better suited for television viewing after a few drinks.
