Consider keeping this one buried. Donald Petrie directed Grumpy Old Men, with Mark Steven Johnson responsible for the screenplay. Jensen handled the cinematography. The movie centers on a decades-long dispute between two neighbors that escalates as they reach old age, complicated further by the arrival of a new female neighbor. It’s simple to criticize the predictable plot and acknowledge that the writing doesn't quite measure up to classics from Wilder or Simon, but that feels beside the point. This is a different kind of movie now, and the filmmakers have skillfully adapted it to showcase the abilities of Matthau and Lemmon. Both are excellent; their rapport is undeniable, and their reactions to the dialogue are genuinely amusing. The film isn't perfect—the dramatic sections feel awkward—but the humor ultimately carries everything, resulting in a holiday movie appropriate for adults, filled with warmth and laughter.
