This film brings back memories of those Children’s Film Foundation productions from the sixties, sharing a similar feel as we observe “Charlie’s” (Priya-Rose Brookwell) story. Having been essentially left by her mother to pursue a career in California, Charlie has moved from a care home and is now living with her financially challenged aunt "Dinah" (Golda Rosheuvel) on the farm. Discovering that repossession looms for them, she decides winning the local pumpkin competition—and its £100,000 reward—is their best hope. While she seems to have a connection with plants, Charlie doesn't know how to grow anything and enlists the help of "Arlo" (Nick Frost), who lives in a caravan, to get the seeds started. Similar to “Lady Grantham” from “Downton Abbey,” the usual champion of this yearly contest is the manor house’s owner (Jane Horrocks), but this time she faces competition not only from Charlie but also from a scientist's (Jeremy Swift) laboratory-created pumpkin, which happens to be the father of "Oliver" (Dominic McLaughlin), who is assisting his new classmate. Then, unexpectedly, these pumpkins start being attacked and destroyed. It appears there’s a slasher in the area! The question becomes who is responsible and why? The suspense isn't particularly intense, and it runs a bit long, but it’s exactly the kind of lighthearted family film that has become rare. Horrocks and Tim McInnerny are delightfully over-the-top in their roles as the wealthy landowners, and the two children seem to be genuinely enjoying this silly journey through competitive and secretive rural life, complete with some darkly humorous moments around teatime, and Frost provides amusement throughout.
