I genuinely liked this movie, which seems unusual given that many people who typically enjoy war films didn’t feel the same way. Since I don't often watch movies about warfare, it might explain why Greyhound resonated with me. The film is surprisingly brief, clocking in at just a little over 90 minutes. As someone who writes (though not particularly well), I can picture the screenwriter—or should I say, Tom Hanks!—wanting to condense the action to create a sense of urgency and keep the pacing aligned with the important battle sequences. Of course, only Hanks and a few others truly know the reasoning behind it. Not every war movie has to be sprawling; we could let some simply tell an engaging story, even for those like myself who aren’t big fans of the genre. The performances were largely understated, which felt appropriate. This was the captain's initial real assignment at sea, so he needed to project a calm and authoritative demeanor regardless of what he might have been feeling internally. The crew’s survival depended on their ability to remain composed under duress. I especially appreciated Stephen Graham’s quiet assurance in his important job analyzing sonar readings. I felt the story had enough suspense to keep things moving, particularly when you consider that some of the most intense moments happen when nothing is visible—when the U-boats are submerged. There's been discussion questioning the film's realism and accuracy regarding certain details, but I’m not so sure. It’s interesting to note that the novel by C. S. Forester which served as the basis for the movie was used as a training tool by the navy for quite some time. I intend to watch Greyhound again; it seems like one of those films where repeated viewings might uncover subtle nuances I initially missed.
