An inventor on the move (played by Hoyt Axton) picks up a charming animal from a Chinatown store as a Christmas present, but when its instructions aren't followed, things quickly spiral out of control. Zach Galligan takes on the role of the son and Phoebe Cates is his girlfriend. "Gremlins," released in 1984, blends elements of a Christmas film with comedy, fantasy, and horror to create an enjoyable movie for casual viewing. The mogwai creatures initially appear endearing, leaving you uncertain about how events will unfold; however, the story thankfully takes on a surprisingly dark tone. Having Phoebe Cates in the cast is definitely a plus. The movie has a runtime of 1 hour and 46 minutes and was filmed at Universal Studios in Universal City, California. GRADE: B-
