CinemaSerf on Gregory's Girl

7/10 · May 24, 2024

John Gordon Sinclair’s performance earned him a BAFTA nomination back in 1981, and the film itself received the best screenplay award in 1982 – and what sticks with you is his endearing portrayal of the lovestruck, awkward teenager from Cumbernauld. He plays the central character who finds himself relegated to goal because he’s not quite up to scratch on the school football team. While he's no superstar, things look brighter when the girl he likes, "Dorothy" (Dee Hepburn), expresses an interest in joining the squad. A female player! It seems ridiculous! However, the school prioritizes winning games over traditional gender roles and allows her to play, which gives the unlucky “Gregory” a chance to get closer to her and possibly even work up the nerve to ask her out for some chips. The result is a gentle comedy that brings back memories of those teenage years, filled with raging hormones, poor choices, and crushes on people who seemed completely out of reach. Gregory isn't sure if she has any feelings for him – whether he’s wearing his friend’s stylish jacket or not. It offers an enjoyable look at adolescence, though it doesn't break new ground, and also highlights how we all pretended to support each other as we navigated the changes of puberty. His character is well-supported by his clever younger sister "Madeline" (Allison Forster), and there’s even a small role for Scottish comedy icon Chic Murray. It shows its age somewhat, but the underlying themes remain relevant, making it an undemanding ninety minutes that elicits those familiar feelings of embarrassment in all the best ways.
