“Greenland” proves to be better than most disaster movies out there. The script by Chris Sparling uses the familiar end-of-the-world storyline but adds some unexpected elements and turns of events, which prevents what could have been a standard action film from feeling quite so predictable. John (played by Gerard Butler) is desperately trying to protect his wife (Morena Baccarin) and son (Roger Dale Floyd) from a comet threatening Earth. With less than 24 hours until the major impact, survival seems unlikely. While shopping for groceries, John receives a frightening notification from Homeland Security informing him that his family has been selected to evacuate to a secure bunker in Greenland. As they try to reach their destination, things quickly begin to unravel. Director Ric Roman Waugh previously collaborated with Butler on “Angel Has Fallen,” and he’s well-suited for this project. He effectively portrays a world descending into chaos and disorder, drawing the viewer directly into the experience. The film moves along at a good clip, and the sense of urgency is palpable. The visual effects are impressive, particularly during the scenes depicting widespread destruction—which, after all, is usually why people choose to watch disaster films. What’s especially noteworthy is that the movie avoids becoming one of those overly patriotic disaster movies. There's no overt display of American pride or heroic posturing. Instead, “Greenland” aims higher and achieves its goal. It’s a genuinely well-made and entertaining film for casual viewing.
