This movie is twenty years old, and I continue to enjoy it. It’s admittedly centered around Ryan Reynolds in skimpy underwear, and he’s undeniably appealing for nearly two hours. He portrays "Hal," a somewhat unreliable test pilot who jeopardizes his company’s valuable government agreement, largely due to the equally attractive "Carol" (Blake Lively). Simultaneously, this nebulous villain—one who thrives on fear—has broken free from his isolated prison located at the edge of the universe, prompting the “Corps” to assemble and confront him. When one of their top operatives is defeated by this threat, a ring—representing the Order’s power—is passed to the unexpected "Hal." What follows puts Ryan in skin-tight leather and goggles that offer minimal disguise as he discovers lessons about willpower, self-control, and the significance of green! Concurrently, some complications arise involving "Hector" (Peter Sarsgaard), the unfortunate son of the influential "Sen. Hammond" (Tim Robbins), adding extra burdens for both "Hal" and "Carol." The visual effects are acceptable; Mark Strong delivers a deliberately over-the-top performance as "Sinestro," and the individuals in those excessively long capes contribute to the lightheartedness. It’s not “Star Wars,” and the writing isn't great, but what's so bad about it?
