The journey from oppression toward a more hopeful existence is often filled with obstacles, disappointments, and difficult choices. When people seeking refuge hear of what seems like a reliable path to escape their circumstances and reach safety, they’re inclined to seize the opportunity. This was true in 2021 concerning the “green border” crossing from Belarus into Poland, presented as an easier route for those fleeing the Middle East and Africa toward the European Union. However, because neither country wanted to manage a large influx of refugees then, combined with worries that these new arrivals might be a security risk to Poland's conservative government, border patrol officers in both nations began aggressively arresting people and sending them back across the boundary, repeatedly exposing those caught in the middle to harsh treatment and dangerous situations. This film from writer-director Agnieszka Holland brings attention to what occurred during this period, a situation that persists even now despite some changes following the Russia-Ukraine War. The movie portrays this through four separate storylines showing how the green border affected refugees, border guards, people working to help those passing through, and ordinary citizens trying to influence Polish government policies.
