It’s likely that appreciating this satirical comedy at face value is the best approach, because the underlying hypocrisy becomes difficult to ignore otherwise. Steve Coogan portrays a self-made incredibly wealthy man planning an extravagant 60th birthday celebration for himself on Mykonos, with no limits on spending. Working alongside his former wife, Isla Fisher, and his mother, Shirley Henderson, we are shown the most tasteless and vulgar behaviors of the ultra-rich, while they take advantage of practically everyone they encounter—regardless of gender, background, or ethnicity. Jamie Blackley, as "Young Richard," receives whatever praise is available. He’s kicked out of his exclusive school for repeatedly swindling classmates; then he defrauds those in London's garment industry before establishing a discount store that launches his future billion-pound business. Coogan performs well as the unpleasant and exploitative “McCreadie,” while David Mitchell seems stiff as his biographer, "Nick," and Asa Butterfield has a few scenes playing his somewhat awkward son, "Finn." However, the rest of the film feels riddled with inaccuracies and contradictions. The humor is rather straightforward; the recurring parodies from "Gladiator"—specifically why lines spoken by Richard Harris in that movie were delivered by Coogan using an Australian accent—become tiresome, and the conclusion is simply absurd. If it’s trying to offer a social critique about how the wealthy accumulate their fortunes at others' expense, it needed to be more thoroughly researched and attempt some kind of understanding between the desires of the rich and poor, as well as those of frugal consumers seeking something for nothing in Western countries and their consistently ineffective politicians.
