You’re insincere and fabricated, and I regret ever seeing you! Grease comes from director Randal Kleiser and features John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John, Stockard Channing & Jeff Conaway. The screenplay is a collaboration by Jim Jacobs, Warren Casey (Musical), Bronte Woodard & Allan Carr. The story takes place in 1958 when Danny (Travolta) experiences a summer romance with the sweet and innocent Sandy (Newton-John). She then attends the same school as him, but he feels pressure to maintain a tough persona. They have disagreements, reconcile, their friends are also quite erratic. Plus, there’s the bonus of some really catchy songs and dance numbers. Despite being overflowing with both energy and silliness, Grease is a musical that's difficult to find fault with. The performances aren't particularly impressive, the direction straightforward, and the story could have been sketched out on a coaster from the 1950s. However, it’s these very shortcomings that make it so appealing; its quirky appeal goes hand in hand with those lively musical pieces. It doesn’t matter that the actors are too old to portray high school students—the enjoyment comes from seeing them playfully relive their teenage years. There's even suggestive content and playful lyrics for adult viewers. A genuinely entertaining film whose enduring popularity seems limitless. Watch it, have a good time, sing along, choose your favorite song and character, and then acknowledge its brilliance; because Grease is the word, baby. 9/10
