The film is undeniably beautiful to look at, and I think experiencing it on a large screen would enhance its impressive visuals. Still, I have to admit that the rest of the movie felt rather average. What bothered me most was Dr. Ryan’s actions; she seemed awkward and inexperienced, initially slow to follow evacuation instructions and then needlessly expending energy by talking when she should have been saving oxygen. It made me wonder if she received even basic training before going into space. I also thought it was a very typical Hollywood trope that she could easily access the Chinese space station, only for it to immediately begin falling toward Earth. Overall, it seemed like the writer lacked real technical understanding of the subject matter. Setting aside these problems, which sadly seem common in films, I found the movie to be reasonably enjoyable. Certainly, I can’t endorse the extremely positive ratings some viewers have given it, but neither do I agree with the harsh one-star criticisms. The special effects were well done, and Bullock did about as good a job as could be expected considering the script she had. Clooney felt a little odd portraying an experienced astronaut, though he wasn't in the film very much. Ultimately, I consider it to be a pleasant movie to watch while eating popcorn.
