CinemaSerf on Grand Theft Hamlet

The disruption caused by lockdown affected countless individuals, but perhaps nowhere more intensely than within the entertainment sector. With theaters and movie houses shuttered, performers faced financial hardship and a pervasive sense of boredom began to permeate their daily routines. "Grand Theft Auto" offered one form of distraction, introducing us to working actors Sam Crane and Mark Oosterveen. These two men in their forties were coping with the situation by virtually eliminating as many on-screen characters as possible. The first lives with Pinny and has children; the second resides alone and is having difficulty finding purpose. During a gaming session, they discover an outdoor amphitheater and conceive of performing "Hamlet" there. They quickly understand that delivering Shakespeare’s lines onstage would likely result in their virtual demise, and then realize two people can't possibly handle all the roles – so they begin searching for other players to join them. What follows is a series of encounters with aspiring performers, some who mistakenly believe he authored "Harry Potter," and a generally diverse group of individuals who ultimately agree that this production can be realized. I’m uncertain if Shakespeare ever imagined his play being staged amidst warplanes or enormous blimps while the actors faced genuine danger (though it's possible such elements might occasionally enhance a stage performance!), but as the two men become increasingly invested in their endeavor, watching them becomes quite captivating. Will they succeed? What effect is this passion having on their actual lives? I’ve never engaged with GTA myself and worried that my unfamiliarity with the game would diminish my enjoyment. That wasn't the case; it actually proved to be a clever framework for their story, as the variety of characters they met clearly demonstrated that these men weren't alone in a world brought to a standstill. As anticipated, the film moves at a brisk pace and I considered it a worthwhile use of ninety minutes.
