The storyline of Grand Prix feels somewhat flimsy, not entirely enough to warrant its considerable length, but it remains captivating and exciting nonetheless. The film focuses on the 1966 Formula 1 racing season, featuring James Garner, Yves Montand, Brian Bedford, Eva Marie Saint, and Toshiro Mifune among a sizable group of performers. It explores the challenges faced by the drivers, both during races and in their personal lives. The interpersonal conflicts occasionally veer into melodrama, though these character-driven narratives do help to create an emotional connection with the central figures. When the racers are competing, we’re privy to their mental states, which is reflected in their driving style and how they handle pressure. Frankenheimer's direction of the racing sequences is exceptional, utilizing multiple camera angles and split screen techniques to draw viewers into the action. Two crash scenes are particularly intense, captured with such realism that it highlights the inherent dangers of motor racing. The sound design and editing are also remarkable. It’s best experienced on a large screen, and for those watching at home, seek out the highest quality version available. 8/10
