v0lk4n on Gran Turismo

4/10 · Sep 28, 2023

I’m disappointed with so many aspects of it. I’ve been following the game since the PlayStation 1 era, and the preview didn't excite me, so I wasn't anticipating much. But it turned out to be even worse than what was shown. Honestly, even Gran Turismo—which isn't a full simulation—feels more authentic in some ways. For example, what’s up with the Hungaroring? Silverstone Academy is an inverted version of it, and Le Mans (La Sarthe) looks like a standard Hungaroring… Racing doesn't involve drivers bobbing their heads around; cars don't explode, engines do. There are no spotters outside of oval racing! Track races have qualifying rounds—you can’t just start somewhere random. You shouldn't be able to overtake opponents by downshifting and suddenly flooring it. GT3 cars are as quick as any car on the straights. The Le Mans 24 Hours doesn't end on the final lap; it concludes at the end of 24 hours plus one lap. The Nurburgring is 20.83 km long, and if you crash in the middle of it, there aren’t yellow flags waving on the start-finish straight. I could go on, but I'm already losing interest. The soundtrack is good, the cinematography is well done, and the CGI blends seamlessly, but it lacks heart and technical accuracy. I’m surprised Yamauchi San approved this, especially since he's a genuine racing enthusiast. In my opinion, this film is the second major failure in the *Driven* series.(4/10)
