Elaine C Smith, a familiar face in Scottish comedy, often steals the show, but in the new BBC comedy short Govan Fair Queen, it’s Harper Blue Hamilton who really stands out. Harper plays Abigail, a nine-year-old with a quick wit who finds herself unexpectedly entered into a beauty pageant in a working-class Glasgow neighborhood by her grandmother Linda. The competition isn't just about winning a vacation to Florida; it's also about resolving an old family dispute because Linda feels she was unfairly denied the title in 1968. Written and directed by comic Paul Black, the film is a sincere look at the humor and strength of the women from his childhood community. Notably, the entire cast is made up of female actors, which emphasizes a world where powerful, unusual, and caring women are front and center. Linda, played with both forceful and ultimately affectionate energy, is shown raising Abigail on her own in a small, somewhat messy living room filled with smoke, decorations, and religious symbols. Like the other determined mothers preparing their daughters to compete as “mini-mes,” she’s an unusual but very believable character. Abigail displays a similar determination to her grandmother, hinting that this strong personality is something she inherited. Govan Fair Queen provides a kind and realistic look at its working-class Glasgow setting. Even though the environment might appear plain, the characters are full of life, and the humor comes naturally from who they are rather than relying on jokes. The short has a lovely atmosphere and is visually well done; director Black’s talent is clear in scenes like the wide shot showing all the girls during their “talent” portion. Govan Fair Queen is a charming, funny, and skillfully made celebration of community, family, and female strength that represents a noteworthy contribution to Scottish comedy.
