Drawing from the recollections shared by John A. Gotti in his book, this film recounts his father’s rise through the criminal underworld, starting with humble beginnings and culminating in his position as head of the Gambino crime family and one of New York's richest figures. The movie begins with a segment where the elder John Gotti (played by John Travolta) speaks directly to the audience about how wonderful New York is, which unfortunately establishes the overall feeling for what follows—a rather disappointing biographical film. The chronology feels jumbled, and because the story deals with actual events, it lacks any real suspense. Travolta doesn't seem to be at his usual level of skill, and while Spencer Lofranco (as John Jnr.) is physically imposing, he seems out of place as if he wandered over from a different production set. It’s surprisingly lacking in menace for a film about gangsters; the dialogue feels excessive and clinical, and there's not much energy coming from the other actors, who seem to be simply going through the motions. Ultimately, it’s a lackluster effort that reveals very little about what motivated this individual, though it might have boosted sales of turtleneck sweaters.
