It has a promising setup, the initial scenes are engaging, and the brief concluding segment works well. However, what happens during that hour in between is wandering, self-indulgent, perverse, excessively exaggerated, and just plain boring. I'm willing to accept the unpleasant aspects—I anticipated them—as long as the narrative holds my attention, but it doesn’t. It's essentially a series of drug-fueled performances and shocking displays set against an appealing gothic backdrop. One bright spot, among other things, is Natasha Richardson at her finest; she’s stunning to watch. She was married to Liam Neeson from 1994 until her death in 2009 following a skiing accident. If you're searching for a gothic film set in the 1800s that's genuinely worthwhile, “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” (1992) is an option. For something exploring similar themes that's truly good—and in several respects exceptional—consider “Marie Antoinette” (2006). "Gothic" doesn't measure up to either and deservedly failed at the box office. Director Ken Russell’s unconventional projects occasionally succeed, such as “Altered States” (1980), but this isn’t one of them.
