The discovery of a disturbing scene in Moscow’s Gorky Park pulls "Insp. Renko" (William Hurt) into a complex web of deceit, making it difficult for him to determine who his allies are. The KGB and the Americans appear to be connected, with suspicion ultimately falling on the mysterious furrier "Osborne" (Lee Marvin), known for his stylish sable hats. What follows is a rather restrained combination of thriller elements and romantic undertones, and Marvin’s appearance almost immediately signals what kind of experience viewers can expect. While he commands attention on screen, it unfortunately highlights how little Hurt seems engaged in the material; I consistently found him underwhelming. The rest of the performers, including Brian Dennehy and Ian Bannen as the somewhat deceptive prosecutor "Iamskoy," don’t contribute significantly either. There's a general absence of suspense, and the story progresses at an unhurried rate. It feels overly talkative—there's simply too much dialogue that slows down the narrative considerably. A more focused edit and reduced amount of talking might have improved it, but as presented, it’s just rather lifeless. Cold, but lifeless.
