Ray Liotta delivers a remarkable performance as Henry Hill, a character drawn to the allure of organized crime from a young age. Initially working as an errand boy, he quickly gains acceptance within the local criminal network headed by Paulie (Paul Sorvino), and forms close bonds with fellow criminals Jimmy (Robert De Niro) and Tommy (Joe Pesci). Their daring robbery at JFK generates significant attention, but Tommy’s unpredictable nature proves problematic; one night, his actions push them toward a downward spiral. Their seemingly perfect existence of illegal activities begins to unravel as they find themselves under investigation. Scorsese allows the narrative to unfold deliberately, carefully crafting the characters—their personalities, their bonds of trust, moments of division and loyalty, and displays of ruthlessness—in a way that feels entirely believable. It’s easy to understand why young Henry would be attracted to this lifestyle, so different from his working-class Irish-Italian upbringing: the enjoyment of fine wine, companionship with women, and the excitement it provides are undeniably tempting. The film's final thirty minutes feel somewhat rushed; after such a lengthy development of the characters, the conclusion seems hurried. This is a minor criticism, though. While not quite on par with "The Godfather," it comes remarkably close.
