The dictionary defines "charming" with the example, Goodbye, Mr Chips. Mr. Charles Chipping is a rather timid young man who begins teaching at Brookfield, an all-boys English school. His initial experiences there are not particularly successful; after nearly losing his job, he oversteps boundaries through discipline and causes financial trouble for the school due to a sporting tradition. It seems that everyone at the school is against him, whether it’s the students or the other teachers—Mr. Chipping can't seem to do anything right. While on vacation in the Austrian Alps, Chipping meets Katherine Ellis, and from that point onward his life and personality undergo significant positive changes. Goodbye Mr Chips exudes a classic feel; every scene gives off a wonderful atmosphere transporting you back to a time of innocence. I believe Goodbye Mr Chips likely resonates with many people. Perhaps some individuals who favor more modern sensibilities won’t appreciate such gentle sentimentality, but those people could hardly choose a better experience than letting Mr. Chips into their lives. It has taken me close to 30 years to finally watch this film from beginning to end, and after seeing it recently I feel rewarded beyond my initial expectations. From the awkward nervousness that Mr. Chipping displays in the opening scenes, to the final scene which brings the entire movie to its beautiful conclusion, Goodbye Mr Chips is a truly lovely, charming, and joyful picture. Considering all of the Academy Awards given throughout history, Robert Donat's seems especially well-deserved. It’s a performance that combines all the necessary emotional qualities for portraying a character who is developing, whether he's shy or driven to succeed—Robert Donat brings so much depth to his role that it could easily become a standard of the 1930s. Greer Garson has only around 20 minutes of screen time, but as far as brief performances go, it leaves a lasting and special impression. There's a scene where Donat and Garson dance with carefree joy; this alone makes the film worth watching. Still, a movie is only as good as its ending, and that’s where Goodbye Mr Chips truly shines, providing a fitting conclusion to all of the emotional threads woven throughout the film. If you don’t feel warmed by the final credits, there's really no hope for you. Thank you, Mr. Starkey and Mr. Lowry; this film reminded me of your excellent teaching from many years ago in my primary school days. 9/10
