Bergman delivers a nuanced performance as a woman who achieves great success professionally but still needs comfort just like the infatuated Philip—a role Perkins plays exceptionally well; I’d even say it's one of his best. Montand embodies the charming rogue with a certain captivating quality, and Jessie Royce Landis also does good work portraying the young man’s mother who skillfully navigates the delicate situations around her. The film offers an insightful perspective on ageism and sexism, stereotypes, and tackles hypocrisy and double standards in a gently humorous way, avoiding any lecturing or preaching. It's presented with elegance, and Anatole Litvak allows at least four of the actors to truly inhabit this intimate melodrama, leaving you feeling that ultimately, nothing is settled.
