The film’s portrayal of Terri Hooley's life feels somewhat overshadowed by an exceptionally good soundtrack that will likely be appreciated by many who came of age in the UK during the 1980s. Richard Dormer is at the center of things, and against a backdrop of the conflicts that impacted Northern Ireland, he embarks on opening a record shop in Belfast with something for everyone. Before long, he’s collaborating with local musicians, utilizing any means necessary—begging, persuading, borrowing—to secure opportunities for them, from small performances to recording contracts within the region and beyond. Dormer's portrayal of this committed, albeit sometimes unfocused, individual is engaging, and it’s supported by a solid ensemble including Adrian Dunbar, Jodie Whittaker, and Killian Scott, who sports dyed blonde hair as part of the punk band "Rudi." The musical storyline is occasionally balanced with news reports showing some of the devastating destruction in the city, but it consistently returns to Hooley's core message of hope and positivity. It seems like a rather straightforward interpretation of events, but I found it enjoyable to watch and listen to.
