I have to think those recommending Good Time were being facetious because it’s anything but enjoyable in the traditional sense. It’s an intensely uncomfortable, frustrating, and disheartening experience—and I found myself captivated throughout. The visuals really stood out; a significant portion of the film is bathed in neon light or illuminated by screens and distant street lamps. Despite the movie's bleakness, seeing Robert Pattinson’s face highlighted by those vibrant colors is striking. It’s just my taste, but I would watch it simply for the lighting—it provides a wonderful contrast to the grimy atmosphere of everything else. The narrative was my biggest issue, though the performances, cinematography and music are so strong that it didn't detract from my overall enjoyment as much. I praised the acting, primarily because Pattinson and Benny Safdie were excellent; most of the other actors felt more like plot devices and were adequate (with the exception of Barkhad Abdi who seemed disconnected). If your only exposure to Pattinson has been in the Twilight films, where the performances feel stilted and the actors simply deliver lines with a vacant stare, this is a complete transformation—he gives a very convincing and genuine portrayal. The story isn't flawless; it suffers from pacing issues and moments where you find yourself wondering about character motivations, but it’s still a gripping tale that remains relentlessly dark and somber while somehow retaining an emotional core. The film centers on Pattinson as the lead, attempting to assist his brother with developmental challenges after they leave their home, though whether or not you want to support him is genuinely uncertain. The conclusion wasn't what I anticipated or desired, but it’s a fitting resolution for the movie. Good Time isn't something most viewers will appreciate or even desire to see if they understand its true nature; however, if you can respect a consistently dark and depressing film that never relents, then it is a worthwhile piece of cinema with an important message.
