Reno on Good People

7/10 · Sep 9, 2016

It’s an unexpectedly strong film. It has the appearance of a French thriller, but is actually adapted from a novel. The plot centers on an American couple living in London who are about to forfeit their inherited home due to substantial debt. Their situation improves when they discover money left behind by a deceased tenant. Because it's tainted money, they hesitate before spending it, and subsequently find themselves caught up in a terrifying ordeal that forces them to flee from dangerous individuals. The narrative is compelling and the film is skillfully crafted, but I’m puzzled as to why it hasn’t received more attention. While critics did what they typically do, even dedicated movie fans have dismissed it, which seems unfortunate. It may feel somewhat familiar in its themes, but it's highly entertaining with several intense scenes. The climactic confrontation between all the characters was particularly well done, and presented in a straightforward manner. Both of the main actors delivered excellent performances, as did Tom Wilkinson in his brief role. The story is contained and primarily unfolds over the course of a week. However, the film moves at an impressive speed, getting straight to the point without unnecessary exposition or drawn-out development. There are still some unanswered questions, such as how the man died in the couple’s apartment. Aside from those elements that might introduce tired tropes if explored further, this is certainly worth seeing and I'm glad I found a good thriller after waiting so long. I would suggest watching it. 7/10
