I had expected something considerably more captivating than what it turned out to be. The documentary recounts the story of the remarkably inventive and far-reaching effort to dispatch two self-propelled, solar-powered rovers to Mars—one named "Spirit," and the other bearing the similarly titled “Opportunity.” We know from historical accounts what transpired, but I was really anticipating a deeper exploration of this incredible achievement in science and engineering than what’s presented in this rather impersonal narrative style. While there are occasional glimpses of actual footage, these are infrequent as the film progresses in an unexpectedly detached manner, failing to convey any sense of the excitement, frustration, or passion that must have been felt by the team involved as the mission gained momentum. In fact, it feels quite slow-moving throughout. It resembles a video diary presented chronologically and featuring some rather sincere testimonials. Certain of the songs used are enjoyable, but whoever decided that showing numerous scientists speaking directly to the camera would be compelling clearly missed an opportunity to incorporate more of the imagery NASA gathered. The conclusion also feels overly sentimental and left me feeling somewhat let down.
