If you found the character of “Clarence” a little sad in "It's a Wonderful Life" (1946), then you should prepare yourself for “Gabriel” (Keanu Reeves). He’s an angel just starting out, and he has small wings, tasked with preventing drivers from texting while causing accidents. Feeling restless, he notices “Ari” (Aziz Ansari) and thinks he might have found someone to focus his attention on. This man works a job where he runs errands for people and lives off of the little money they give him. One errand takes him to the fancy house of "Jeff" (Seth Rogan). He’s supposed to just clean out Jeff's garage, but turns out to be much more helpful and is quickly hired as his personal assistant. He even gets a company Amex card! That comes in handy when he takes his date “Rosa” (Bianca Araceli) to a restaurant that his new boss suggested and finds the bill surprisingly high. Naturally, "Jeff" isn't happy and immediately fires him. This is where their angelic interference goes sideways. "Jeff" and "Ari" switch places. The former now finds himself without money or a home, while the latter is living comfortably in his luxurious hilltop house, and poor “Gabriel” loses his wings because of his angry boss “Martha” (Sandra Oh), who says he won't get them back until he fixes what he’s done. To make this happen, he needs both men to agree to the switch, but that seems unlikely. Especially since an angel without wings or powers isn't very helpful when it comes to making sure they have food, and “Ari” is now enjoying his life of cashmere and champagne. If you’ve seen the recent "Freaky Friday" remake, this film has a similar feel with lots of silly moments that combine a good dose of greed with an easygoing sense of doing what's right. Rogan and Ansari are both entertaining to watch, but it’s really Reeves who stands out as his disappointment grows; he takes up all-night dishwashing, starts chain smoking, and begins to realize there’s more to being human than he thought. The writing and production aren't particularly original, it’s just a pleasant time that makes fun of the very rich (who don’t really do anything worthwhile) and the working man who puts in long hours but still has to sleep in his car (until it gets towed). It’s enjoyable entertainment.
