The character “Tommy” (played by Anson Boon) is initially presented as an unpleasant teenager who drinks too much and enjoys picking on people. His life takes an unexpected turn when he wakes up one morning completely alone, feeling the effects of a night out. The story then introduces "Rina" (Monika Frajczyk), who travels to a secluded house in the countryside for what seems like a routine interview for a cleaning position conducted by “Christopher” (Stephen Graham). During a tour of the property, she meets his wife, “Catherine” (Andrea Riseborough), who appears withdrawn and detached, along with their son, “Jonathan” (Kit Rakusen). The tour continues to the basement where Rina discovers a young man secured to a wall. This turns out to be "Tommy," still as verbally aggressive and intimidating as before, though now less intoxicated. Surprisingly, Rina isn't deterred by his behavior, suggesting she has her own issues, and we then observe a strange and unsettling process that could be described as rehabilitation, not just for Tommy but perhaps for others involved. A highlight of the film is Anson Boon’s performance; he convincingly portrays an obnoxious individual at first, but gradually reveals a more intelligent side as relationships within the house shift in surprising ways—pay attention to his expressions! Andrea Riseborough also delivers a strong performance, effectively concealing her true nature. With roughly thirty minutes remaining, I honestly had no idea how events would unfold for any of the characters. Could this be Stockholm syndrome? Or perhaps something that resembles it? It’s an engaging experience and I anticipate seeing more from Anson Boon in the future.
