Patrick (Casey Affleck) and Angie (Michelle Monaghan), who work as private investigators, are brought in by a mother desperate to locate her missing daughter. This type of case represents new ground for them, though their local connections could prove useful in finding people hesitant to cooperate with the police investigation being managed by Doyle (Morgan Freeman). It’s understandable that the girl's mom, Helene (Amy Ryan), isn't portrayed as a particularly engaged parent, but she is clearly driven by a desire to be reunited with her child. The story then unfolds as they pursue this inquiry within their Boston suburb, leading them into encounters with criminals, drug sellers, and various groups of dangerous individuals. Their efforts do begin to yield results—though the nature of those findings isn’t exactly welcome news. As the narrative progresses, details about who was involved in what, and more importantly, why, come to light, creating a significant ethical challenge for Patrick and Angie. The chemistry between Affleck and Monaghan is quite strong, and Ben Affleck directs the film with a steady rhythm and a believable sense of threat. I felt that chance played too large a role in resolving things at the end, but it remains an engaging and stimulating narrative that ultimately poses a question to the audience—one without a simple answer. Morgan Freeman’s presence is limited, but Ed Harris provides noteworthy support alongside Titus Welliver, all contributing to a tense and absorbing drama deserving of attention.
