The film manages to be a strong mystery thriller, though its consistently melancholy atmosphere can be draining. Ben Affleck’s first time directing proved to be respectable. *Gone Baby Gone* offers unexpected developments and turns of events within the crime genre. The quality of the actors and their portrayals highlighted the emotional burden associated with investigating a kidnapping, and that sense of weight permeates everything you see. However, this pervasive seriousness does make it somewhat difficult to find pleasure in watching. I simply felt sadness when the credits rolled because of the bleak and gloomy feeling throughout; it's evident that was the intended effect, and it’s achieved effectively, but it prevents the movie from being a film one might typically consider entertaining.
