The film opens with Bond and a partner undertaking a dangerous mission, which results in the other agent’s death. Even at the time of its release, it's clear to viewers that this character didn't really die; he is, in fact, the antagonist. This isn’t giving too much away. The plot largely involves confrontations with Russians, and predictably, any sympathetic Russian character meets a swift end thanks to the seemingly invincible villain. A small amount of dark comedy involving a computer expert toward the conclusion provides some entertainment. Beyond that, there's not much to say. It’s simply another disheartening Hollywood production following a familiar pattern—the predictable descent into darkness—that pushes this idea too far, becoming overly elaborate and artificial throughout.
