It felt good to see Bond return to theaters, coinciding with when I got my driver's license; it wasn’t my initial experience seeing a James Bond film in cinemas, but it was the first one I could drive myself to. I recall that journalists were preoccupied with figuring out who would take on the villainous role now that the Soviet Union had dissolved. Having already viewed all of the existing Bond films and becoming quite invested in the series, that’s when I initially noticed how short media attention spans can be—a lesson that has stayed with me throughout my life. Regardless, it was a stylish introduction to see Brosnan only briefly at first...it would have been preferable if the world hadn't already known he was Bond, but I suppose it provided an unexpected moment for those who managed to avoid all the publicity in the year or so before the film’s release. Those people who missed out on all the buzz. Tina Turner delivered one of the more memorable 007 theme songs, Brosnan gave a strong performance as 007, and Onatop was likely the last example of those characteristic Bond villain names to appear in a movie (unless you consider Christmas, whose name was just for a closing gag). Overall, it was quite enjoyable. The tank chase alone is reason enough to watch it, as is the appearance of 006. Ultimately, though, it proved to be a capable and respectable film that’s largely cherished because of the sense of relief it provided: relief that Brosnan was Bond, relief that they were making more 007 movies, and relief that some entertainment had returned.
