Bigas Luna’s 1993 movie, *Huevos de oro* ("Golden Balls/Eggs"), which plays on the idea of both a goose laying golden eggs and a man’s toughness, tells the story of Benito Gonzalez (Javier Bardem), a young construction worker who climbs to wealth as a property developer along Spain's Mediterranean coast. Following his first girlfriend’s abandonment—she leaves him for his friend—Benito becomes fixated on constructing the tallest building in Benidorm; it could be interpreted simply as an oversized symbol of masculinity. While consumed by this ambitious project, his desire for Claudia (Maribel Verdú) is put aside when he prioritizes having her seduce potential investors to secure their backing. He then marries Marta (Maria de Medeiros), a banker’s daughter, to gain access to her father's money. Benito indulges in excessive sexuality and eating, particularly the Alicante sweet torrón. Similar to some of Almodovar’s films, Bigas Luna seems interested in poking fun at Spanish cultural clichés and regional variations. Eventually, though, Benito’s arrogance results in his ruin. While he is undeniably a repulsive character, despite not revealing how things conclude, I found myself feeling a strange sort of pity for him as he reaches the lowest point. A considerable amount of time passed between my initial viewing of this film and seeing it again, but during that period, I often recalled its plot and final scenes, reflecting on the sadness of losing everything and ending up in such a state. *Huevos de oro* isn't a profoundly complex movie, yet that narrative trajectory, closely mirroring traditional tragic structures, is noteworthy, and I believe it’s a film worth seeing.
