By 1993, Toho was continuing their Heisei era Godzilla films, and this time they revived Mechagodzilla alongside Rodan, also introducing Baby Godzilla. The story is wild: a top-secret government group wants to eliminate Godzilla, so they use technology and creature experimentation from past enemies to build a new Mechagodzilla, which quickly becomes Super Mechagodzilla. Expect destruction, psychic abilities, concealed intelligence, and maternal feelings throughout the film. Surprisingly, this is one of the stronger entries in the Heisei series. The usual city-leveling scenes with miniature models are entertaining, but it’s great to see that the special effects are noticeably improved compared to earlier films. The action set pieces are cleverly designed by Takao Okawara; especially the final confrontation between Godzilla and Mechagodzilla, which is a really enjoyable mix of over-the-top silliness and laser beam devastation. Akira Ifukube delivers another excellent musical score, and while you won’t find any remarkable acting, everything just works together well. The only real problem is that Baby Godzilla! It's adorable, but also incredibly irritating. 7/10
