It seems like there aren’t many options left and we’re all heading toward an end, so just go for it! Have a good time! Let’s celebrate while we still can! Go ahead, let your mind be blown! This eleventh entry in the Godzilla series is without question the most bizarre and also the most likely to provoke disagreement. Hedorah, or The Smog Monster, arises from pollution and begins its destruction of Japan. It releases toxins, fires acidic sludge, sucks up smoke from chimneys, and can even change form. Then comes Godzilla, who steps in to try and save humanity; he’s even able to fly in this installment... There are some psychedelic animated sequences mixed into the film, which go along with the overall hippie feel and musical breaks that seem like they were inspired by LSD. It's a difficult movie to suggest with any certainty, as director Yoshimitsu Banno doesn’t do a good job of choreographing the action or keeping the story flowing in a way that makes sense – he clearly wasn’t a top-tier director. Still, it is just strange enough to see why some Godzilla fans appreciate it, almost like it's an enjoyable side project from the more serious movies in the franchise. The environmental message is worthwhile, but honestly I would probably need to be pretty intoxicated to ever want to watch it again. 5/10
