This installment, the twelfth Godzilla film, centers on an employee at a monster-themed park who discovers his new bosses are extraterrestrials intending to use Ghidorah and Gigan to wipe out Earth. Now it's up to Godzilla and Anguirus to come to humanity’s aid! By the time the 1970s rolled around, Toho decided Godzilla needed to be more appealing to families. The fearsome atomic creature who previously crushed human settlements was replaced by a protector of humankind. Godzilla would now face off against – or fight alongside – other creatures, and these battles were the most entertaining parts of what amounted to fairly simple stories. We’re treated to a kind of tag-team situation where Godzilla and Anguirus join forces to confront the three-headed power of Ghidorah and Gigan, who is new to the scene. Gigan's appearance is certainly odd, but with hooked limbs and a buzzsaw in its stomach, it makes for a formidable opponent capable of inflicting serious harm. The storyline is incredibly flimsy, just another reworking of old ideas, and the repeated use of pre-existing footage becomes irritating. And yes, this is the film where Godzilla and Anguirus have a short exchange with each other—a bizarre moment that no fan should be subjected to. Fortunately, the action sequences are enjoyable, including a fantastic scene where Godzilla dodges and weaves like a boxer while battling Ghidorah. Anguirus, as has happened before, functions more as a distraction than a true threat, but it hardly matters since the giant lizard once again demonstrates his status as king of the monsters. It earns a 6/10.
