Godzilla: The Planet Eater was really let down. While I don't strongly feel either way about the initial two anime films, and City on the Edge of Battle remains my personal favorite, this one just didn’t work for me. The characters remain essentially unchanged from the first installment. Haruo seems to grasp what’s happening, but it's frustrating that he's the central figure across all three movies without any real development. You anticipate some kind of resolution, but instead, he steers his ship toward Godzilla and seemingly sacrifices himself. With Metphies, you can spot the villainous intentions from a distance. Considering how the previous alien race turned out to be antagonists in the prior film, it’s almost predictable—especially given Godzilla's history with extraterrestrial threats. Godzilla feels like an afterthought throughout this trilogy, even though I do appreciate aspects of those earlier movies. They talk about him frequently in the first two, but he's barely present in them; however, in this one, his role is minimal – just a few blasts of atomic breath and then defeating Ghidorah. That’s it. Ghidorah in this film represents the worst iteration of the character we’ve seen so far. If you thought the Heisei or GMK versions were subpar, you'll feel bad for them; this version looks more like a pile of spaghetti than a dragon. People joke about what you see is just a silhouette, and it only lasts for a few seconds, which doesn’t really count. The "battle" between Godzilla and Ghidorah isn't much of a battle at all—Ghidorah bites Godzilla, and Godzilla does nothing. Overall, this could have been a decent conclusion to the trilogy. I do appreciate that they attempted some new approaches; even if those ideas didn’t fully succeed, I still recognize their effort.
