I might have considered this film worthwhile decades ago, but now I find myself questioning the reasons behind its popularity. To me, it felt rather average. What’s commendable about the movie is the camerawork, acting, and other filmmaking elements—these aspects are noticeably better than much of what Hollywood produces currently. It's also refreshing that it doesn’t seem to be pushing any particular agenda, which is certainly a positive thing. However, set in postwar Japan, the film carries a pervasive sense of sadness for extended periods. I don’t think choosing a protagonist who was a Kamikaze pilot who failed and then spends the entire time feeling sorry for himself was an ideal decision. The plot also stretches believability quite a bit, even if we disregard the giant nuclear lizard element entirely. For instance, it's hard to accept that other countries would simply abandon Japan to deal with a massive monster capable of appearing anywhere while armed only with unarmed ships. And the elaborate scheme devised to defeat it just seemed ridiculous. While the science behind sinking something in saltwater using bubbles is valid, such an unnecessarily complex plan feels more appropriate for a cartoon featuring a Roadrunner and Coyote than a serious film. I might have been able to overlook these flaws if the special effects were impressive, but unfortunately, they aren’t particularly good. The way Godzilla looks is problematic; his disproportionate anatomy—with huge legs and a large belly—makes him appear more like a child's toy than a terrifying monster. While it may be consistent with the original, one wouldn’t recreate the Mummy to resemble Boris Karloff in a modern remake. His movements are also strange, almost reminiscent of Ray Harryhausen’s stop-motion animation. Often his forearms seem unmoving and lifeless. When he walks, he takes a step forward, pauses, then takes another, repeating this pattern. Furthermore, during the final confrontation, he's standing still in water supposedly thousands of meters deep, as if his feet were firmly planted on solid ground. It’s somewhat disappointing, considering all the praise it has received.
